Georges Marie Delfosse - Back to the list

Georges Marie Delfosse was born on December 8, 1869, in St-Henri de Mascouche, Québec. He studied painting under Father Chabert. While doing his classical studies at College Saint-Laurent, he also studied under Brymmer and Dyonnet.

His first commissioned works date from 1885 and, as early as 1888, he exhibited at the art association. Religious painter at the beginning of his career, he participated in the decoration of the Cathedral Marie-Reine-du-Monde and the churches of Saint-Félix-de-Valois, Saint-Henri-de-Mascouche and Sault-aux-Recollets. He also earned his living as a portraitist. He painted the portraits of sir Wilfrid Laurier, J.L.Tarte, L.O.David, Sir William Hington and Mr. Justice A. Ouimet before becoming the painter of Old Montréal. He also created 200 large paintings for churches in Canada and the United States. In 1908, he left for France where he worked at Léon Bonnat’s studio and with the painter Alexis Harlamoff. In 1914, he undertook a second stay in Europe. He passed away in Montréal in 1939.
